To simplify it tremendously, cadence is the quantity of revolutions per minute that a cyclist tends to make with the pedals. A higher cadence using a low gear is significantly much better for your knees than a low cadence with a higher gear. It can take some getting employed to but there is lots of data offered on-line to guide you. And you could usually try asking for tips in your neighborhood bike shop or cycling club.
